Our life is reliant on the values we live by. Your values have a deep effect on every decision you make. If your life is working, great, you must be aligned with your true core values. If your life is not working the way you wish it was, take a look at which values you have allowed to slide.
We face tough decisions everyday. How do you react to them? Much of my success through life is based on the fact that my values guide me and shape my priorities and reactions. They aid me acting as my markers to tell me if my life is heading in the right direction and if it is not it warns me helping me to turn back in the right direction.
I’m sure you’ve felt that sense that something just isn’t right. It’s your value system trying to guide you.
But maybe you didn’t understand this.
What do I mean by values? By ‘values’ we are referring to the things we care about and strive for in life.
Why do values matter? Because they are related to the kinds of attitudes we hold, and the way we act. They represent our guiding principles and they control our motivations in life.
Once you discover what your values are you will improve the results you get in those areas that are truly most important to you. Knowing your values will deepen yourself knowledge. You’ll literally get who you are, and what you’re about. With an understanding of yourself you will know how to make decisions according to the things you believe in. And believe me when you are on the right track great things keep happening.
Values are priorities that tell you how to spend your time, right here, right now. But again why is this important?
I can’t help but laugh a little bit at that question. As both a personal development coach and blogger one of the most common problems people come to me with is I can’t manage my time effectively. In other words I don’t have enough time to get things done.
Time without doubt is a limited resource. After all we each only have 24 hours of it every day. We need to spend between 6 to 8 of those hours asleep. Once that time is gone there is no way we can bring it back.
So the worst thing we can possibly do is a waste a second of that time. . If we waste time doing stuff that not only has no feasible point, but also doesn’t align with our values, not only has that time gone forever, we’ll spend more time beating ourselves up for wasting such a precious irreplaceable resource.
When we are at one with our values it is so easy to determine our priorities, as its also easy to ensure we bring about a balance in our lives. We ensure we make the best use of our time, day after day.
Being a 50 year old man, I feel I best be the voice of experience and pass on whatever wisdom I’ve got to the younger generations. So let me tell you something I’ve come to realise more and more over the last few years. We all are only granted a limited life span, so its stupidity if we don’t make the best use of the time we’ve got.
I see so many younger people not have a clue what they want from life, and they certainly are devoid of values and direction. They seem to be in survival mode, let’s just get through the day. I find this frightening, because its virtually the same attitude that I see from many pensioners in their late 70’s and 80’s.
Look life is for living. And you should start when you’re young, and keep going right till the end. When you take time to discover your value, determining for yourself what’s truly important, you really do get a compass for life directing you on to the right course and it helps you stay there.
If you want a transformation for your life, you’re not happy with the way it is right now, then look at your values.
Once you’ve got them you’ll know that every day you’re making not only the best use of your time, but you’re focusing on the areas that are most important to you in life. You know your priorities and you find it easy to stick by them.
Values act as our compass to ensure we are on course every single day, moving in the direction that takes us closer and closer to the perfect life we desire.
I have attached to this article a brilliant exercise titled Values Discovery Questionnaire which if you give yourself an hour to complete, well its going to help you identify your values therefore create the compass your life so badly needs.
I don’t know you, or maybe I do, but I bet you’re worth that time, so go ahead and do this for yourself, I promise you the results will be worth the effort and of course the time it takes.
