Today I had a webinar with my team. I had a thought right at the end, you know the type, one of those things you know you feel is right. They need to have a personal mission statement for life. This is simply a set of guiding principles which clearly state where they are going and where they want to be at the end of their life.
Life is a journey. With every journey, you can only reach your destination if you actually know where you’re going. How annoying it must be to keep getting to places you simply don’t want to be at.
So do you have a personal mission statement? If not, I strongly suggest you make it a priority to create one? If you do, it will impact your life enormously.
Writing a personal mission statement can be the most important activity an individual can take to truly lead one’s life. When we create a mission statement and choose to live by it we empower, motivate and inspire ourselves enabling us to lead happier and more fulfilled lives. When you do this you create for yourself a brilliant personal vision statement.
It enables you to stay focused on the things that truly matter to you. Importantly, when you live day by day fulfilling your personal mission statement you prevent yourself from being side tracked by the myriad of other things that can steal your time, energy, and resources. No more finding yourself going off track constantly. You are zoned in on exactly what you want to be doing.
Creating a mission statement is not something you do overnight. It takes time, thoughtful analysis, lots of thinking and often many rewrites to produce it in final form. It may take months before you satisfied with what you write, but the effort is worth it.
In order to write a mission statement:
- You need to define what you want out of your life
- State the things you are committed and dedicated to
- Once you’ve created it, live by it
Being a visual person, I imagine my 80th birthday party. Yep I’m still looking good. See healthy lifestyles living has a lot of benefits. So my friends, family and people I’m connected to in business are all gathered around to celebrate me and my life. If this was your 80th birthday what would you want them to say? What character attributes and accomplishments would you want them to mention?
In my case, my daughters will come, thriving and beautiful in their middle age. And my breath will catch at the sight of them. The privilege of being their father is the deepest joy of my life. But what sort of life will I have made? I know I will be a happy person having enjoyed the journey and lived with courage determined to make a difference. I will share my personal mission statement and how it enabled me to bring about my hopes and dreams. Everyone will see who I wanted to be and what I wanted my life to be about. They will all see the benefits of writing a personal mission statement as being that it will bring clarity to their lives and hopefully, not only they will find I’ve achieved what I set out to do, but now they’ll write up their own.
So I want all of you to know, the process of writing your personal mission is very motivating and will bring you a sense of mission and purpose. Just don’t wait for your 80th birthday.
“A mission statement embodies your values. It is your personal lighthouse keeping you steadily on the course of your dreams”.
Start by writing all the things that are most important to you, all the things you want to do, be and have.
For me I decided that whatever business I commit to had to align with my personal mission, my values and my goals. For every new opportunity that comes along, I would ask myself does it align with my goals. Regardless of how much money I could make, if the opportunity does not align with where I want to be, then I would not pursue it.
You have a purpose in life, your reason for being. Once and for all express this by writing your personal mission statement.
The time you invest in it now, will pay a huge dividend over the years. You’ll save yourself the wasted time and heartache that comes from going through life without a clear sense of direction or going down paths that lead you off on totally the wrong tangents.
Your personal mission statement should be what’s most important to you, what you desire to focus on, what you want to achieve, and, ultimately, who you want to become. It’s your vision for living a life supporting your inner-most beliefs and values.
Here is my personal mission statement:
My mission is to guide others in discovering who they are and inspiring them to reach their full potential. I live everyday with integrity and consistently make a positive difference in the lives of others utilizing my knowledge and passions.. I have been placed here to improve the lives of those I connect to, and this will be my measure for success in life. I have the gift of communication, and challenge myself to use this gift to deliver powerfully effective messages to others. I lend them my voice, to motivate and inspire them to make personal improvements.
So ask yourself
- When your life is over and people speak at your funeral, what do you want them to say about you?
- What can you do that adds value to not only your life but the lives around you?
- What values and principles you I stand for?
- What are the roles I have in life?
Now go write your personal mission statement and let it change your life. Live your life through your personal vision statement it really will make you excel at everything you do.
