Are you clear about your career direction?
Frustrated with your current job, but unclear what to do?
Ready to turn your life around, but don’t know how?
So many of you have this feeling that you’re not making the most out of your life and have no idea what changes you need to make.
You have come to realise that your life is absent of direction and purpose with no excitement or passion driving you forward.
You are not alone!
It seems that a majority of people are doing jobs that give them very little satisfaction or fulfilment. In fact many actually hate the job they’re doing.
Not a great way to live!
I wrote about a young man who finds himself not only in a job he hates but one that is not providing him with the income he needs to provide for his young family. He feels stuck with no where to go.
Well I’m telling you all that there are options available for you.
I’m not saying it’s going to be easy. But you can create a far better life for yourself where money is no longer the cause of all your despair, worry and the cause no doubts of stress and arguments. I feel for anyone living like this, because we’ve all been there at some point.
You need to find the career that is RIGHT for you! And you need to start looking right now!
People talk about finding your passions, and then building a business around them. I completely agree with this, but unfortunately most people fall at the first hurdle. They can’t find their passions.
Well believe me every one of you has something that you’re passionate about, and a strength or skill that can turn this passion into a dynamic business.
Yet I know some of you are now screaming at the monitor, because you’ve heard this before, but you haven’t found this ‘passion’ area, yet you’ve tried so many times to discover it.
Well ok the penny hasn’t dropped yet. Maybe because so many of the people that peddle ‘the power of passion’ seem to make the journey of discovery so complicated that even a genius would struggle to find the answer.
Let me therefore make it easy for you today. Just do three very simple things.
1. Look inwards: Do a self-assessment to review your accomplishments, as well as your skills, abilities and knowledge so as to determine who you are, what you excel at, and what you’d be happiest doing.
2. Look outwards: Identify areas for professional development which bring with them the right opportunities to determine how those personal skills and desires align with the demands of today’s market place.
3. Look Forward: Start working towards bringing it all together.
Let me help you bring this all together. Answer the following questions.
1. Describe three major accomplishments in your life that were highly satisfying and enjoyable to you. These can be personal, academic, or professional.
2. When the minutes fly by during the workday, what types of things are you doing?
3. Consider how you spend your time when you are not at work. What interests, hobbies, and activities do you enjoy? What skills and abilities do you utilize in those situations?
4. If you could do whatever type of work you wanted (no restrictions), what would it be?
5. What are your strengths? Where do you excel?
6. What skills do other people recognize in you?
7. What do you do better than most people you work with?
8. What, about yourself, are you most proud of or satisfied with?
9. What experiences, resources or connections do you have access to that others don’t?
10. What interests would you like to explore further?
Now let me tell you something that I doubt you’ve read before. All of the above are great and probably 25% of you will have found the answer to where your passions lie. Alas the rest of you are going to be as stuck as ever.
Well try this!
Contact 20 people or more in fields of business that you find interesting, no matter what they are or how unqualified you may feel you are. Ask if you can interview them. They could be family members, friends of family, or people you see online. Explain to them that you are in search of what career Is right for you?
Here are some suggested questions you can ask.
Describe the kind of work you do.
How did you get into this field?
What interested you in this field?
Describe your career path and how it has evolved over time.
What is the most satisfying part of your role? What parts do you not enjoy as much?
What are the most important qualifications for this type of position?
How did your educational and prior work experience prepare you for this position?
What projects are you currently working on?
Describe a typical day in this role.
What are the major opportunities and challenges facing your field today?
Can you suggest other individuals that I might speak with to learn more about this area? May I use your name as a referral?
No more excuses get talking, messaging or emailing. Start exploring so as to find what career Is right for you.
I’m ready to guide you if I’m on your list.
