I certainly NOW don’t worry about what others think about me, and you shouldn’t be bothered either about what they think about you, because when you do, you allow yourself to be controlled by their reactions and views rather than just doing what you want. So many people I know hold themselves back in life because they fear others opinions.
I have a simple approach for myself.
I know some people HATE me…
…And some people LOVE me.
But to me what’s most important is that I make my mark so that they never forget me!
When I was a young lad, about 12 or 13 I really was so desperate to be popular. I did everything I could to try and get noticed and for people to like me. It got me nowhere. Yet what I soon found was by concentrating on things that I was good at, like certain sports, people wanted to play against me or have me in their team. Before I knew it I had plenty of friends and was seen as someone worth knowing.
You have to accept yourself for who you are. After that it doesn’t matter what other people think of you. After my darkest period of my life, a period that will soon be featured heavily in my Never Give Up Program, I was so embarrassed and ashamed of what others would think about the things that had happened to me. I had this fear that everyone would constantly be judging me and see me as a failure. It virtually stopped me from doing anything, and for a while I hid away from everyone. Not a great way to live for a people’s person like me.
How crazy is it that I spent so much time worrying about what other people thought of me. It held me back, and only once I woke up to the stupidity of my thoughts was I able to move my life forward. Once I used my story to help other people instead of hiding it, my life transformed and improved dramatically over a short space of time. I had nothing to be ashamed of, and in fact it made my recovery so much more impressive that having lost so much I soldiered on and have rebuilt so much.
I emerged from 18 months of ‘nothingness’, during which time I lost myself in a downward spiral of stress, negative thinking and shame. I had become my own worst critic and was sure everyone that I met knew what had happened to me and had a low opinion of me because of it.
Once I learned to no longer criticise myself and not care what others thought it truly allowed me to progress and achieve so much more. I also was able to help so many more people by sharing my story and showing them how to deal with similar problems in their life.
What I had learned is that by caring too much about what other people think about you, can stop you from pursuing your dreams. Yet when you pursue your dreams you can guarantee that many others will benefit from what you’re doing.
Accepting that people will think what they want to think, some will like you, and others won’t. There will always be people who like what you do, and those who don’t. There will always be people who love you, and those who don’t.
All I need is my own personal approval! Equally important is having a valuable reason for being. Like for me, I am driven by helping others, and not worrying what people think about me as long as I can help change lives.
I stay true to myself and do what I want, doing what my heart urges me to do. I don’t ask “what should I do”, instead I do ask “what do I want to do?”
Instead of worrying what other people think about you, focus on doing the things that bring you the most happiness, being true to your self and never be afraid what others think or say about you.
