Let My Vision Impairment Demonstrate The Need To Live In The Moment

We take so much for granted in our lives, particularly many of our body’s every day functions like breathing and seeing, yet when we are then struck down with something like vision impairment we wake up to what is truly important.

Our eyes give us the sense of light, enable us to learn about our surrounding world, give us the ability to read, work, watch television, use a computer, write a letter, drive a car, and countless other activities. For example cooking, we use our ovens, grills and hobs, as well as microwaves daily, to cook our meals and your eyes not only enable you to see the dials and settings but to check on the foods progress. Without the sight our eyes provide us with we would be unable to detect shapes, colors, and dimensions of objects. When we walk we will often be confronted with many obstacles, land posts, other pedestrians, curbs at the edge of the pavement. They’re not really obstacles are they? Well of course unless you have vision impairment.

Imagine what life would be like if you couldn’t see well. Reading might not be possible. Watching a movie could be tough. It could even be difficult to focus clearly on the face of a loved one.

I personally have vision impairment. My right eyes sees nothing more than just a blur. My other eye struggles with long vision but can be corrected with lenses. Adapting to one eye I can assure you is not easy. My consultant at hospital was right, ‘you’ve lived 50 years with two eyes, now you have to learn to just use one.’

It’s been a hard road but one that I’ve learnt so much from.

Today I want to share one of the most important lessons I’ve learnt.

LIVE IN THE MOMENT!

Live in the moment means being conscious, aware and in the present with all of your senses. It means not dwelling on the past, nor being anxious or worrying about the future. It’s certainly not allowing the whirlwind of thoughts in your mind to distract you from the beauty of life.

When we give our full attention to what we are doing and we let go of what we see as our obligations and the demands we feel that we have to meet, we allow ourselves to appreciate life itself, taking the true value out of the small and big moments savouring every minute.

To make every moment count we must embrace it. Everything we do and every person we come in contact with deserves our full attention.

I’m a great believer in pursuing my dreams, working hard, often long hours, writing, coaching, networking, blogging and teaching. I love my work and the results I can help produce in the lives of others. Yet I would be doing justice to nobody by not taking out time for myself. Finding moments like where I’ve just spent with my granddaughter simply observing her, listening to her breathing, taken in the picture of her face, eyes closed mouth holding on to a dummy, her curly hair just shining with the sunlight pouring through the windows. Moments like this are the greatest energisers we need to rejuvenate ourselves.

This vision captured through my one eye will now stay within me for ever. When I close my eyes and decide to recall this moment it will just come back to me, preserved for my lifetime.

So there I am sitting on the end of a three seater couch on Saturday late morning. On the other end to me is a giant four foot teddy bear. I am just watching my granddaughter lying between us, fast asleep under a blanket surrounded by 3 other teddy bears and Tigger too. She is fast asleep looking so beautiful, peaceful and at peace with the world.

I am transfixed and finding myself so relaxed while enjoying simply watching this cute little lady.

There was nothing I would have rather been doing at this moment. It was perfection. Everything else could wait.

I believe it is important to live in the moment and just enjoy yourself, take time out to capture special sights and memories.

We live such busy lives. So many obligations and responsibilities. Life is like you’re caught in the middle of a hurricane. Everything racing around you blowing out of control. You try so hard to deal with everything but it seems to be impossible and you spend most of your time trying not to be blown away. Fighting for survival or perhaps prosperity you feel the need to stay busy all the time. But at what cost? Stress, ill health, the feeling of constant pressure and anxiety.

“The secret of health for both mind and body is not to mourn for the past, worry about the future, or anticipate troubles, but to live in the present moment wisely and earnestly.” Buddah

When you walk into the house this evening, reach out to your children, your wife or husband, girlfriend or boyfriend. Hold their cheeks in your hands. Look into their eyes. Capture the vision of their faces like never before notice the color of their eyes — the color of their hair, see every detail of their face. Feel your love.

We live in a world of senses — hearing, smell, sound and sight. And, we take them all for granted. I know I did until I lost sight in my right eye. It’s not too late, It’s never too late to richly live the moment you’re in. Today, you be more motivated than ever before to reach in and connect with your mind, body and soul.
