Only if you get off your ass and go for your dreams will you be giving yourself the opportunity to move your life forward in the direction in which you want to move. Yet more often than not you find excuses to keep you from even getting started.
You are afraid to die, and you’re afraid to live. What a way to exist. Neale Donald Walsh
I am currently working with someone who has an awesome idea for a business. He has already made a start and has enjoyed some success. Yet he keeps holding back and never builds any momentum. He is not making the most of his possibilities. At the moment it is very much a side line, yet it could be so much more.
No one said starting up and growing a business was easy. But it’s essential to stay inspired and motivated to go for your dreams, take risks, put time and effort in and do everything you can to build a business,. Especially if it has good potential. You can’t take your foot off the pedal particularly in the early days.
Starting a new business is tough. According to statistics, about 65 percent of all businesses fail within 5 years after they are launched. But others do succeed and achieve amazing things. You got to put your all in and try your best to find out whether you’ll be one of the successes or failures. What’s your alternative? To stay doing a job you don’t like, or working for others who don’t appreciate your value?
When times get tough, take heart in the fact that you are at least giving your dream a try. The best part is you are working towards achieving your dream. This client of mine is always finding himself drowning in fear when he thinks about stepping out of his comfort zone. He has a comfortable life but is capable of so much more. He just has to find the courage to get of his ass and go for his dream.
Why is he so scared? Inside he knows he can accomplish anything that he puts his mind to but he does fear failure. That inner voice he has in his head has a spectacular talent for running him down and influencing what he does. So many of you suffer from the same. Stay safe and don’t take risks seems to be the most common message you repeat to yourself time after time.
Every time he thinks about putting more time and energy into building this business he feels paralyzed by the strength of this thought and finds an excuse to forget about it yet again. As more time elapses, he gets to feel more intense frustration of how he never seems to be able to commit to building this business that would indeed deliver so many of his dreams.
In periods of reflection he gets angry with himself for “bottling it”. “I’m holding myself back,” is what he says. But although he sees what his not doing, it therefore makes no sense that he keeps procrastinating. Procrastination one of the worst human traits. Procrastination is a natural human tendency to put off completing a task time and time again, it’s the action of delaying or postponing something important.
He is aware he procrastinates, wastes time surfing the internet and rarely finishes what he planned. As a result, he doesn’t achieve his goals, or effect personal change.
I asked him if looking back in 10 years’ time does he think he will regret what he didn’t do, perhaps such as taking this business venture more seriously and throwing his all into it. Of course he nodded in agreement. He already knows the stupidity of not pushing forward and doing so much more to go for your dreams.
I immediately followed up with another question.
Wouldn’t it be better than spending many sleepless nights in the future living with regret for what you failed to do, to instead, right now, battle your fears that to this point have dominated your decision-making and kept you from taking action?
After all, I continued, even if you tried and failed, surely you’d be no worse off than you are currently? Isn’t it time to stop holding yourself back and do what you know is going to be best for you and your future, taking ownership over your life?
What do you keep putting on hold in your life? What dream do you never start working towards? Now ask yourself the same questions and get off your ass and get started and go for your dreams.
Anything is possible. You can be told that you have a 90-percent chance or a 50-percent chance or a 1-percent chance, but you have to believe, and you have to fight. Lance Armstrong
