The eyes of the world will be on London for the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games. I’m already excited. Silly really but the fact that the Olympic torch is being carried through my town on my 50th birthday on the 17th June just makes it all the more fascinating.
To be the absolute best in the world is a dream that drives Olympic hopefuls around the world. Every kid swimming their first 100-meter freestyle or running their first 1000 metres dash on the track, surely imagines that gold medal hanging around his or her neck. It is that impossible dream, the ultimate goal, to reach the pinnacle of something you do. To be the very best. Olympic competitors have in the main had these dreams from a young age, and have stuck through thick and thin, and now they’re about to appear on the world’s largest sports stage.
Who hasn’t at least once imagined standing on the podium, listening to their national anthem as their country’s flag raises into the sky celebrating their victory, and their achievement. The TV Cameras, Lights, cheers from thousands of people and the applause of your nation, make a proud moment for anyone who wants to represent their Country at the Olympics. The completion of a life time of effort. The training, the dedication, the effort you have put in to get to this point. The sacrifices that you will have had to put in are massive, but that medal was worth it all. You have fulfilled your ultimate goal, your achievement will be recorded in history. Tell me even now, that this doesn’t resonate at least a little emotion in you.
This has to be one of the ultimate dreams. Like every goal, it begins as just a dream. The sacrifices that people go through to achieve greatness in their desired field can be immeasurable but the journey will be filled with priceless lessons that will guide them for the rest of their lives.
To take on the challenge of any dream is one of the most rewarding human experiences. To achieve that dream takes hard work, determination and dedication. It can only be achieved by committing to and by adopting a winning attitude that will carry you through to the finish.
You just have to dream big never forgetting excellence always begins with a vision. And never lose sight of the dream. There are always barriers to face as you pursue a dream. The dream itself may provide sufficient motivation for most days, but when times get tough you need the encouragement and persistence to keep going
Take a look at your life. How would you describe it? Do you still dream of doing great things one day? What is the most dominate dream you think about? Would you like to know your chances of achieving it? If you do put your dream through this test
1. Is my dream really my dream? If you want to achieve your dream, you must “own” it. It must be yours, not someone else’s. If the achievement of a dream is not your top priority, it’s highly unlikely that you will do what’s required to accomplish it.
2. Do I clearly see my dream? What does it look like? The more specific you are on what your dream looks like, the more likely you will be to achieve it. So you best be building your mental picture, creating the visualisation, seeing yourself achieving this goal.
3. Is it’s achievement within my control? Determine if reaching your dream is within your control. Are you depending on others? If so, who? Do you have the talent, skill or ability to make it come true? Are you being realistic? If not, can you develop what you need to make it more than a possibility?
4. Do I have the energy to achieve it? Is your dream important enough to you that you will put forth the energy necessary over the time period required? When you are trying to achieve a major goal you need to be empowered to put in time and effort, sometimes you have to go to your very limit. Do you have that within you?
5. Do I have a strategy? Have you taken the time to put a plan prioritizing your steps needed to achieve your desired outcome. To achieve anything in life you need to have worked out how to get there, and know what action you’ll need to take.
6. Who do I have around me that can help me? Who and what do you have at hand that can support, encourage, and help you? Life’s not meant to be lived alone, and we are not meant to operate in a cocoon. We need a support team for everything we do. If you don’t have the right people on your team, identify people you admire and respect; then determine how they can help you. Build your team.
7. Am I prepared to pay the price? Are you prepared to do what is required to make your dream come true?” The bigger your dream, the more it will require of you. Are you willing to put forth the effort, overcome the obstacles, and deal with the disappointments that you will face on your journey? Will you get up every time you get knocked down? Are you a fighter or a quitter?
8. Am I moving closer? Look every day to determine whether you’ve moved closer to your dream, have you kept on track? Are you closer to reaching your dream today than you were yesterday? You must take a step forward each and every day. Take some action, no matter how small, for the attainment of your goal every day.
9. Does working toward my dream bring satisfaction? If you are not enjoying the effort and excited by the possibility then you are after the wrong dream. Make sure this is what you really want, that achieving it will mean everythimng to you
10. Does my dream benefit others? If so, Who? Why? When?
How many times did you answer, “Yes”? The more you answered ‘yes’ the more on target you are to achieve your dream. Keep working towards it, you know you deserve it.
