Last night watching the London Olympics closing ceremony I was overjoyed to see Eric Idle performing his sketch. I wonder how many recognized him as being one of the British comedy troupe Monty Python. If you do you’d certainly remember Monty Python and the Holy Grail and the Life of Brian. Two of the funniest films ever made.
There was also their very first motion picture And Now For Something Completely Different.
Now I know that some of you will agree that these guys and their sketches are the funniest things ever, but there are others of you who just don’t get the comedy of the Monty Python team. And that’s exactly how life is.
We all live in our own “personal” reality. The way we experience our world is totally unique to us. How you and I will experience things is determined by each of us individually. There is no universal reality because every moment of every day you and I are interpreting, processing and reacting individually to a non-stop stream of information and stimuli from our physical world; the place we inhabit.
You see things only have the meaning that we give them. Just as things only have the power in our lives that we allow them to have. By the way we react them. It’s our personal interpretations of, and reactions to, what goes on in our day-to-day practical lives that affect everything for us. .
Two people can look at the same thing and have such different perspectives. This was so clearly demonstrated to me by a meeting I had this afternoon. It never ceases to amaze me how different people can look at the same situation and come away with completely different perspectives, with in fact completely opposing interpretations.
In fact I came away from this meeting with one question reverberating in my head:
How can people look at the same facts in such completely different ways?
It was so clear to me that two people can look at the very same scene, or experience the very same event, yet come away with completely different ideas of what they have seen, or interpret it in a totally different way to one another.
How we see things sets the limitation of our perceived opportunities, solutions and alternatives. Because we see things differently, we bring these differing perspectives to all our communications..
“I’ve learned that two people can look at the exact same thing and see something totally different”.
I would love to hear your thoughts on this topic.
I won’t necessarily agree lol
