I don’t like what I see.
For the first time ever I noticed this old guy staring at me.
There he was just looking at me straight in the eye. I looked him up and down. He looked like a 50 year old I suppose. Nothing remarkable there. But how could this be. Surely the mirror was lying. This couldn’t be my own reflection. After all I’ve never looked my age. Being a fitness freak, loving weight training, I’ve always looked years younger than I really was. Two years of ill health have certainly taken their toll. Well no more!
I have been working in the fitness industry longer than I care to remember, but no longer. Now I’m faced with my toughest challenge yet. Getting myself back into shape. Losing weight after 50 years of age, now there is a goal for me.
Let’s look at what I know.
As men get older, their testosterone decreases, resulting in a slower metabolism; a decrease in muscle mass; and more fat deposits on the stomach, waist and chest areas.
I am looking right now at that stomach deposit, and I don’t like it at all.
Time to get things sorted.
What I also know is that to lose weight you need to burn more calories than you consume.
I’m keeping this simple. There really is no need to complicate things, that is what so many lose weight gurus do. They make everything sound so complicated that you’re beaten before you’ve eaten started.
For me, the typical 50 year old guy, to lose weight, I must lower my calorie intake, eat a healthy diet and increase my metabolism through exercise.
What was that Showaddywaddy song Three Steps To Heaven –
Step 1: Cut Calories
Step 2: Eat a healthy diet
Step 3: Exercise
Let’s now look at these.
Step 1: Cut Calories
To lose weight, you must burn more calories than you consume. For every pound you want to lose, you must burn 3,500 calories. You can do this by cutting 500 calories from your diet a day. This would enable you to lose 1 lb. per week. Losing up to 2 lbs. per week, but no more than that, is a safe and effective approach for a 50-year-old man who wants to lose weight.
Step 2: Eat a healthy diet
There will be much more details on this throughout my blog, and much of what I will follow will be based on the Gi diet which I find perfect for healthy eating.
Step 3: Exercise
This is a combination of cardiovascular exercise and strength training. For a 50-year-old man to lose weight, he must engage in 60 minutes per day. Start slow and build up to allow your body to adapt to exercise. Cardiovascular exercise allows the body to burn more calories and strengthens the heart and lungs. Exercises can include running, biking and swimming, to name a few. In my case it will be a mix of weight training that I love, some treadmill work which I need, and playing badminton, that drives me crazy but I’m getting better, slowly.
Engaging in a strength-training program allows a 50-year-old man to increase his muscle mass and bone density and to become stronger. Perform low-to-moderate intensity strength-training exercises two to three times per week for 30 minutes each session. Remember to build up to this if you have not recently been working out. Adding strength training to your workout routine enables you to increase your metabolism and burn calories all day long, which results in weight loss.
I prefer doing these on separate days.
This is just a simple overview of what we need to do. I promise I’ll be putting far more detail into each of the areas. So get used to me writing on losing weight after 50. There’s nothing I can do to reduce my age, but everything is possible when it comes to my weight.
Of course I’ll also be dipping into my ecommerce stock and will be using our Bio-Synergy Ketones, more on them another time.
Start date of diet is Wednesday 31st July. This is just to show diets don’t have to start on Mondays.
As i mentioned this song , a blast from the past i thought i’d go find it and remind us all what it sounded like. So here you go Showaddywaddy – Three Steps to Heaven.
