You’re ready to make those healthy lifestyle changes you’ve been telling yourself you want to make. You’ve tried before but more than likely weren’t able to stick to the changes you tried to make.
Making lifestyle changes is challenging, especially when you want to transform many things at once. That’s the mistake you’re making.
Once you’re ready to make healthy lifestyle changes, the difficult part is committing and following through. Setting small goals and taking things one step at a time gives you the best chance of success.
Creating healthy lifestyle changes doesn’t necessitate drastic changes. In fact, drastic changes almost always lead to failure. Making small changes in your lifestyle can lead to massive health benefits, so figure out what you can to be healthy today.
For many people, creating a healthy lifestyle can be a very long and drawn out process. Some people may not have the mental or physical strength to actually get there, however, there is nobody in this world that lacks potential to make small incremental changes.
All you need to do is examine your everyday habits and make simple tweaks to your routine.
The day-to-day choices you make influence whether you live a life blessed with good health or
plagued by illness.
If you really want to make a change, then you can! I won’t lie to you, it’s not going to be easy. Committing to a healthier lifestyle takes a lot of effort, but it’ll be worth it! To really make a lifestyle change, you need to have an attitude that this is forever. Not short term because that’s not how it works. Neither is it a quick fix. Health needs to be for life, and therefore living a healthy lifestyle something permanent in your life.
Start by changing one bad habit at a time.
Let me provide you a really simple plan. You see I know that often simplicity is best. The easier you make your healthy lifestyle changes the better you’ll do.
Start by assessing your lifestyle as it is right now. Look at it closely. See what you do well and what not so well. Conduct a brief assessment of your (1) health (physical, mental, and emotional), (2) relationships (family, friends, romance, and colleagues), (3) work-life balance, (4) stress levels, (5) self-care and leisure activities. Ask questions such as:
Do you eat healthily?
Do you exercise every day?
Do you sleep around 8 hours a night?
Do you take time out for relaxation?
What are your bad habits?
What are your good habits?
Are your relationships harmonious?
Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise. Benjamin Franklin
Next you need to determine what changes will be of most value that will produce the biggest improvements for you. Do you want to eat healthier, stick to exercise, diet more effectively, ease stress, improve your relationships, get more sleep, cut out bad habits? It’s best to concentrate on just one choice at a time. When a certain change fits into your life comfortably, you can then focus on the next change.
Then you need to create your goals. As we are changing one thing at a time decide which change is your priority and then build a goal around this. So for example if you want to get fitter, choose a goal that is specific and measurable.
Now you have to be clear why you are intending making this healthy lifestyle changes. Your why will be the key to whether you stick with it. If your reasons are important enough for you, you will refuse to allow yourself to sabotage your attempts.
You’re ready at this point to create your plan of action. Start small. After you’ve identified realistic goals, break down your goals into small, manageable steps that are specifically defined and can be measured.
For instance, if you wish to implement a lifestyle change of improving your physical health, implementing some form of exercise will no doubts be one of your steps. What activity are you going to do? What days will you do it? How long will you do it for?
But remember change one behaviour at a time. Many people run into problems when they try to change too much too fast. To improve your success, focus on one goal or change at a time. As new healthy behaviours become a habit, try to add another goal that works toward the overall change you’re striving for.
The only way for a rich man to be healthy is by exercise and abstinence, to live as if he were poor. William Temple
