If you know some of the reasons for tiredness then you can start making changes to give yourself more energy throughout the day. We all go through periods where we feel tired from time to time. Normally, it’s obvious what the cause of this is. Often we’re burning the candle at both ends. So we know that if we take time to rest and catch up with our sleep we will feel fine pretty quickly.
But tiredness can be a serious problem if there is no clear reason for it and it goes on for a long time, and getting extra rest doesn’t seem to make any difference at all. When you get to this stage, tiredness can stop you from enjoying and getting on with life.
Statistics show that 1 in every 5 people feel abnormally tired, are you one of them:
- Do you have difficulties getting yourself going in the morning?
- Do you find yourself constantly yawning through the day?
- Do you feel tired all the time?
- Do you depend on coffee, or energy drinks to keep you going?
- Do you feel stress getting on top of you
- Do you feel less sharp mentally with your concentration all over the place
- Do you have difficulty getting to sleep at night?
- Do you wake up constantly through the night?
- Do you have difficulty waking up in the morning?
- Do you feel even more tired when you wake than you did when you went to bed?
Your starting point is to analyse everything you’re doing, as well as the things you aren’t doing, to determine the parts of your life that could be the cause of this tiredness. Any events that might have triggered your tiredness. Things in your life that might be keeping you tired.
The reasons for being tired can be physical or psychological, or both.
There are numerous physical reasons for tiredness. A few examples would be;
- When you are carrying excess weight your body has to work harder just to do every day normal things.
- When you are weak and underdeveloped your muscles won’t be strong enough to do everyday things without becoming tired.
- When you are unfit, not exercising you will frequently get tired.
- When you are inactive, sitting around all day you get tired from doing nothing
- When you do too much, always on the go, never stopping, you find it hard to recover and get over tiredness.
- Recovering from serious illness can make you tired.
- Less serious illnesses, like the common cold will leave you feeling worn out.
- Of course poor or disturbed sleep will leave you feeling tired
Then there are Psychological reasons for tiredness.
- Worries make you feel tired particularly when you cannot see a solution to your difficulties.
- A common symptom of Depression is tofeel tired all the time.
- Everyday difficulties and struggles naturally tire you out
- Difficulties in relationships tires you mentally which effects you physically
- The strains of working hard to pay bills will leave you feeling exhausted
- Expecting too much of yourself can leave you feeling frustrated and tired.
- Emotional shock which can come from a number of causes including hearing bad news, a death of someone close or the end of a relationship can all result in you feeling tired all the time.
Let’s not forget the lifestyle reasons that can leave you tired.
- Not eating a balanced healthy meal
- Overeating, particularly rich foods
- Consuming too many caffeine drinks, coffee, tea, energy drinks.
- Drinking alcohol in the evening
- Not exercising so you exert your body
- Lack of sleep
I would say the most common cause by far is stress. A busy lifestyle, the challenges of work and family, relationships and events both positive and negative can have an effect upon our mood and energy levels.
The day-to-day stresses of life can impact upon energy levels, making you feel drained. Mental and emotional worries and stress keep our body in a state of physical stress and ready for ‘action’. This makes it difficult for natural relaxation responses to kick in, even when we hit the pillow at night and interfere with sleep.
When stress is unabated, carrying on for long periods of time, eventually, you end up with adrenal fatigue which occurs when the adrenal glands function below their necessary level and leave your adrenal glands unable to meet the demands of stress. With the fact that it is your adrenal glands that mobilize your body’s responses to stress through hormones responsible for regulating energy production, and other processes that allow you to deal with stress, so when they are not functioning properly you become more and more tired.
You don’t have to accept being tired all the time as a normal way of life. You can do things about it to start restoring your bodies proper functioning, and bring your adrenal glands back to working the way they were designed to.
Establishing yourself a healthy eating plan, beginning exercise, ensuring you sleep for around 8 hours nightly and you take time for relaxation is going to be a good starting point for you. Surely it’s worth it, instead of having to constantly fight the effects of tiredness.
