The purpose of this healthy lifestyle website is to provide the tools, resources, and programs helping you to make the right healthy lifestyle choices for your wellness.
I have no doubts you will have heard the word ‘wellness’ bandied around, maybe on the radio, on a TV program you’ve been watching, but you won’t remember simply because there is no significance to you, wellness isn’t important.
But the problem is, wellness is absolutely essential to your life.
It is the difference between health and illness.
Simply put, Wellness is the difference between developing all sorts of disease and illness and being well.
It is the one thing that if you learn to manage it well, you will be destined to enjoy a happy successful life blessed with good health.
A bold statement, but wellness is genuinely of incredible importance to you if you want your future bright, your future healthy.
Would you like to improve your health? Lose weight? Sleep better? Have more energy? Experience more joy and peace of mind? You need a wellness plan to guide you to measurable results and lasting change.
So, what is wellness? Wellness can be broadly defined as “the quality or state of being healthy in body and mind, especially as the result of deliberate effort.” [Dictionary.com]
A previous article I wrote goes into more detail about the definition of wellness called ‘What is Wellness.’
It is about learning to take care of your whole self (mind, body and soul). As the definition implies it is not just your physical self but your mental self as well which needs to be at its best. It is about being in a state of complete well-being. Well-being being defined as a good or satisfactory condition of existence; a state characterized by health, happiness, and prosperity.
You need to care equally for your mind, body, and soul. These three-areas are inter-twined and overall health suffers if even one of these isn’t healthy. If any of these three areas is consistently lacking or forgotten about, it will be impossible to reach an optimum level of health and well-being.
So wellness is the search for health, enhanced quality of life, personal growth, and potential through positive lifestyle behaviours and attitudes. It means that every day you should be taking steps to maximize your level of health and wellness to live long, full, and healthy lives. These steps depend on you making the right healthy lifestyle choices.
It is completely dependent on the healthy lifestyle choices you make. A lifestyle choice is a personal and conscious decision to perform a behaviour that may increase or decrease the risk of injury or disease.
I am positive you have already made lifestyle choices. If you exercise every morning by walking, then you made positive healthy lifestyle choices to increase your physical wellness.
Alas most people make bad choices.
Illness is the consequences of our lifestyle choices. We set ourselves up for disease.
Eating to much processed and nutrient depleted foods,
Getting little to no exercise,
Taking abundant toxic chemicals,
Doing an extremely stressful job,
Having difficult and negative personal relationships,
Spiritual disconnectedness,
No focus on real health and wellness,
Financial problems.
So you want to make improvements! You can begin making big health, mind, and body improvements, by stopping bad lifestyle choices today and instead making healthy lifestyle choices. There are many unhealthy choices easily available in our society: prepared packaged foods and unhealthy diets, physical inactivity, stress, smoking and lots of time sitting and watching television. These contribute to increased incidence of heart and lung disease, diabetes, hypertension, stroke, and some forms of cancer.
You need to make better healthy lifestyle choices, eliminating your bad behaviours.
If we continually refuse to change our lifestyle, we will continually experience disease and its symptoms. We will never gain optimum health or achieve true wellness.
We must consciously choose a different lifestyle and make healthy lifestyle choices.
The Scottish Universities Medical Journal said: “ more needs to be done to change the attitudes and behaviours of individuals to lifestyle choices in order to promote health and prevent disease, consequently easing the strain on NHS services and resources that is currently imposed upon them.”
Committing yourself to a healthy lifestyle is about incorporating healthy choices into your everyday activities.
So the healthy lifestyle choices you make every day can influence your overall health and longevity. Choosing to implement a healthy lifestyle will lead to a longer, happier life with decreased risk of chronic illness. Choose unhealthy habits and be prepared for heartache. Whatever choices we make we have to accept the consequences of them whether good or bad.
As I said in a previous article:
“We all have to make choices every day. Each choice will have consequences. You’ll probably make almost a hundred choices every day. Whether or not to get out of bed, what to eat, what to do, what to think about, what to say, who to see…and on and on. While many of our daily choices may not be of vital importance to your life, some of them will be, and together all your choices in fact will be decisive for your life, so it’s important to understand that they do matter.”
Let’s be clear here. Living a healthy, happy life depends on you implementing a healthy lifestyle. Implementing a healthy lifestyle depends on the choices you make.
Let’s look at a few obvious examples.
You choose to spend your free time today watching Television or alternatively you choose to spend one hour in the gym.
You choose to eat a greasy fry up for breakfast or alternatively you choose oatmeal and fruit.
Every time you’re thirsty you choose to drink coca cola or alternatively you choose water.
After a difficult meeting you choose to drown your sorrows with alcohol or alternatively you spend 30 minutes unwinding and relaxing through meditation.
You see everything in life gives you alternatives, and you’re completely free to make your choice about which alternative you take. But remember every action has a reaction, or in other words, when you choose an action, you choose the consequences of that action.
Only you can make good healthy lifestyle choices in order to achieve what is surely your number one life goal – to enjoy good health.
So are you ready to make the right choices and to implement a healthy lifestyle?
