Let the London Olympic Games begin! We have now been warmed up by the opening ceremony, and what a spectacle that was.
Like a billion other people across this planet I was glued to the opening ceremony of the London Olympics. Now I’m a sporting fanatic, but the ceremonies are normally a no no for me. Maybe I felt it was my patriotic duty to watch this one as it was after all in my home country. I admit that I was completely in awe with this spectacular show, and some of the music, well so much from all my different generations, 60s to 90’s I just loved every minute of it. My Boy Lollypop, was always the song my mum sang to me. A Wow Moment hearing that for me.
It truly was a magnificent pageant celebrating Britain’s history. And what an atmosphere they created, with those drummers dancing and beating out the music throughout. Banging the drum for Great Britain, I loved it!
Over 2 weeks now of sport on Television. Here am I Saturday morning, writing this blog, with the Rowing on Sky Sport, and Beach Volleyball on BBC. Ok, I’m waiting for Mark Cavendish in the Cycle Road Race. It’s luck I suppose I’m multi tasking. Britain just won their rowing heat in the woman’s pair. Come on team GB!
Yes I’m very patriotic. I’m proud of my ancestry. But I’m also a lover of peace. And the Olympics is the world’s best way to show unity, and what can happen when we all come together. Mind you blogging does this too, look at your network, I bet theres people you talk to from so many different countries, and diverse cultures. You each have blogging in common, and friendship.
There will be 204 countries taking part in the 302 events in 26 sports, and a total of approximately 10,500 athletes will be representing their countries.
We all saw last night, so many athletes and sportsman from across all these 204 countries in the world marching into the Olympic Stadium behind their respective national flag. It is mind boggling what could be achieved if there was unity everywhere.
So even though I’m going to be glued to all the sporting festivities being offered up I’m not going to forget the Olympic message. Even while I’m shouting at my TV box, ‘come on team GB’.
So let’s remember the meaning of the Five Rings. The Olympic symbol (five interlocked rings) represents the union of the five original major continents (Africa, America, Asia, Australia and Europe) and the words of the Olympic creed say “The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well.”
While the Olympic motto “Citius, Altius, Fortius” is Latin for “Faster, Higher, Braver.”
What if we all helped one another in every way that we can. Having high expectations for ourselves, but being there to help another. If we all did, what would are world be like.
Every four years, the Olympic Games, brings the world together in peace. It is a showcase of how we can all share common ground and peacefully compete with good sportsmanship and mutual respect. Let us work at making this all our way of life.
Anyway enjoy the Olympics for the great sporting moments it will offer, and good luck to your country and your sportsmen and women!
Ps its 10am in the UK and the men’s cycling road race has just begun. Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish in the GB Team. Maybe our first Gold
