Questions are by far the most incredible powerful tools we coaches have in our armory. They can ignite hope and lead to new insights. They can also destroy hope and keep us stuck in bad assumptions.
The right questions can lead to action and will produce results and can be used by anyone on a journey of personal development.
Personal development coaching is empowering people to change and create new possibilities. It involves deep listening and constructive questions in a goal-oriented relationship with a person who is internally motivated to make changes that are important to them.
Typically the person is in some sort of transition or on the verge of making a major change in their life, and often they are facing some sort of obstacle that is hindering them from moving forward. At the core of the coaching model are these: asking, listening, guiding, providing support, encouraging and accountability for actions taken to move forward in
The coach approach evolves out of asking open-ended questions to probe, expand, and focus the thinking of the person you are coaching.
Open-ended questions get you to about what you are doing and where you are headed. This is called inquiry. These questions cause the individual to look deep inside himself – taps into their personal wisdom and insight. With inquiry, you discover you’ve been thinking, what’s behind your thinking, how you arrived at your current position, and from what assumptions or data you are operating.
Even without a coach you can still benefit from the type of questions we may ask. It is time you ask yourself effective questions.
“If I had an hour to solve a problem and my life depended on the solution, I would spend the first 55 minutes determining the proper question to ask, for once I know the proper question; I could solve the problem in less than five minutes.” —Albert Einstein
Asking the right questions can change our mindset from a limiting one to an empowering one. Questions are one of the fastest ways to change our mental focus.
The questions we ask ourselves on a daily basis could very well be the most critical and important factors that determine our ongoing success, happiness and fulfillment in life. In fact, the questions that we persistently dwell upon influence our thoughts, habits, decisions and actions in insurmountable ways that go beyond our conscious levels of understanding.
Questions that cause us to focus on possibilities and solutions are the ones that empower us.
So let me give you 10 questions that if you ask them of yourself these will help you dramatically improve your life, once you answer them.
1. What Is My Life Purpose?
One of the common themes I see in people that come to coaching, is a desire to explore what they are truly meant to do with their life. This is a question asked by many people as they ponder the reasons for their existence. Our purpose is not here to rest. So you need to determine other questions to answer this one. Why am I here? What was I created to do? Each life is unique and each calling personal to just you. So start by asking the question and see what answers you come up with.
2. What is my definition of success?
When you look back over your life using your definition of success will you be able to say honestly to yourself that you have enjoyed the journey, are happy with what you have accomplished and what you have done. .Did you strike a balance in all areas of your life?
3. What do I wish my life to look like?
What kind of life do I want? What do I want my life to look like, to feel like? Who do I wish to be? Your primary aim is to answer these questions so you know where you want to take your life. It seems most people don’t know what they want to do with their life, all they know is that they don’t want it the way it is right now.
4. How am I using my talents?
Do you know what your talents are? How do you go about discovering some of your talents or natural abilities? If you do know what they are do you use them in the right way? Am I really happy with what I’m doing right now? Does it bring music to my life? Am I content with my current life situation? Am I using my talents in a way that brings me satisfaction? Or could I do much better?
5. What would you want your epitaph to say?
After many more years of achievement, when you reach a ripe old age, what do you want to have displayed for all eternity, about you? What will people say about how you lived your life? Take control: it’s your life, make your mark, so you know what will be said.
6. What’s your Why in life?
Why is the ‘why’ important? Well, because it is what drives the passion, the soul and the purpose in your heart and business. I mean the real reason why you’re here at all — the very reason you exist. Your Why is your ultimate purpose in life. It’s the very reason that you get out of bed every single day.
7. What’s your BIG dream?
When you were a kid you probably had huge dreams and believed you could. What were they? There’s still time to go for your big dreams. Dreams can be powerful and transformative. It might seem like an obvious question, but do you actually know WHAT IS YOUR BIG DREAM? Have you been brave enough to write it down? Rekindle it and once again let it drive you forward.
8. Are you completely passionate about the things you do?
Passion is the fuel that can power you toward the realization of your dreams, but are you allowing it into your life? If you’re looking to feel a sense of passion, excitement, and exhilaration then you have to allow passion to be central to everything you do. Finding the work you love, and the intersection of Passion, Talent, and Opportunity will change your life.
9. What thing if you did it would change your life?
List everything that you would do if you weren’t afraid, the most important things you could start to do to live the life you want now. You can begin to introduce changes into your life. If there was one thing that could change your life for the better, just one factor that could impact everything, would you work hard to develop it?
10. Will you step up and live your best life?
When you daydream, do you dream about improving your life? … You need to step up and pursue your goals to make them really happen. Are you willing to do what it takes? Living your best life is all about being in the process of joyfully creating a life that reflects you. Step up and create the life you want.
When answered truthfully, these questions will create a massive transformation in your life and will propel you forward towards your goals and dreams, the life you were meant to live. Do them now so you’re ready for the year 2013.
Questions are very important. They require you to get silent within, to listen to your inner voice on. Give yourself the time and go through the process of asking yourself these questions.
